On Tree Hugger, I found the website http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/10/paper-coupons-destroy-13-million-trees-every-year-99-never-even-get-used.php?campaign=th_rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+treehuggersite+%28Treehugger%29&utm_content=Google+Reader. It's tells you about the amount of paper coupons that don't get used but, continue to destroy numerous trees every year. That statistics show that 13.62 million trees are cut down for the 99% of the coupons that go into newspapers but never get used. That amount being produced has increased more than 300 million since 2009. The pictures above expresses all the points i have made and shows just how out of hand that problem has become.
I can't believe that that many people throw the Sunday paper out without using the coupons with the economy doing so poorly. Food bills continue to increase for families, so why not use the coupons that the newspaper gives you? The amount of trees being knocked down is an environmental issue, its a waste of natural material that need to be preserved. Not only does this effect the environment but, it effects the ecosystems living there. With the trees being cut down it is destroying their habitat and a possible food source. In my household, my family trashes the coupons received along with the Sunday paper. After knowing all of this i will ask my parents to use them so that there is a benefit out of this mass amount of waste.
~How can this be stopped?
~What is keeping this from stopping?
~How would the the trees not being cut down benefit the environment?
~Why do people continue to increase the amount of coupons in the Sunday paper if they know how much is wasted?

  2. -I always knew coupons were not used very often, except by those weird extreme couponers, but i didn't know they created so much waste. I don't understand why the newspaper companies keep printing coupons considering they must know that not many people use them. The newspaper is printed so many times that they must be cutting down millions of trees and if they can get rid of one or two pages in the newspaper it would save a lot of waste.
    - Personally I don't get the newspaper but I know that many of my neighbors do and no many of them use the coupons they just go to waste. Also when we get groceries they alwaays print out a long receipt with coupons all over the back but we never use them which is a total waste. I think they should stop printing so many coupons when it creates so much waste.
    - I found this website about how some men killed trees by poisoning them and wasted even more paper by toilet papering the trees. They killed trees for no good reason just like newspaper companies kill them to make unused coupons.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=6131518&campaign=rss&source=NCFHeadlines

  3. My family never really uses coupons anymore. I feel that the production of coupons should stop(maybe have electronic coupons). I've watched the show "Extreme Couponing" and the people on there try to not waste as much of the coupons, but even when you're done using them, it's still a waste of paper in the end.
To answer one of Ally's questions, "How can this be stopped?",companies could start making digital coupons for their customers. It could be a lot easier and help stop chopping down trees.

  4. My grandmom knows every single deal at every local market. She only shops for food depending on the coupon she has. Most Americans are not the same way when it comes to their use of coupons from the Sunday paper and this is nothing but a waste. In a preserving mode now a days, the approach needed to be taken is going more digital. I can say as a Sunday paper guy, I hate reading the newspaper online and would rather have the hard copy. But to at least take an economical approach, we should furthermore cut down on printed coupons and have digital accessibility. An article on this topic is as followed: http://www.jillcataldo.com/thefutureofcouponing_digital_vs_paper

-Do Americans really take the time to go online and print out coupons?
    - How much do coupon users typically save a month?
-What are other ways in which newspaper production can be reduced?

  5. My family tends to use alot of coupons and we go through the whole sunday paper looking at all of the coupons before we throw out the paper. Reading this article makes me think that most american families dont do this. This is killing trees and animals habitats so we need to do something about this. I find it amazing how many people throw out coupons when the economy is so bad and saving money is everything.
    -How can we fix this
-How can we inform more people about this problem
-What can we do to print less coupons
I found this article on the same topic http://www.jillcataldo.com/thefutureofcouponing_digital_vs_paper
